Interview with Tre’von Walker Winner of the 2011Travel Scholarship

Five years ago the Context Foundation partnered with Sac High in Sacramento to develop a travel scholarship. The program has been incredibly successful, bringing high-achieving students to Europe and offering them the possibility to learn and experience travel with Context scholars.

To celebrate the 5th anniversary of our program, we have decided to interview the previous winners and see what they are up to!

1. What made you decide to apply for the Context -Sac High scholarship?

I decided to go out for the Context-Sac High scholarship because after having a conversation with a teacher of mine I realized that it would be a great opportunity for me to get a wider perspective of the world, which is not common for most people in Sacramento who usually never get the chance to leave the city. I also thought that it would help put me on the same level socially as a lot of the people that I would be associating with in college soon.

2. Looking back at the trip, is there something you would have done differently, something you wish you had known before going?

Looking back on the experience I definitely wish I would have known a little of the language before coming. Although I was well prepared with knowing the history of the city, I think that I would have been able to get a better grasp of the trip and the atmosphere as a whole had a known the language and was able to communicate with people directly. I also wish that I had added to the trip by making my interest in art apart of the structure of each walk.

3. One year after the trip, how do you think the trip has influenced you in your choices?

A year later the trip is still definitely still influencing my decisions as far as my education and eventually my career. I loved the city so much I want to go back, I plan on studying abroad and learning Italian so I can go back to Rome and I would consider it a dream come true to study art and history in Rome.

Thank you Tre’von! We look forward to welcoming you to Rome and many other cities soon!
