The Context Foundation for Sustainable Travel is a U.S.-based, 501c3 charitable organization with a twofold mission: To mitigate the negative impact of tourism on culture capitals and to make travel a positive force for good in the world. Over the years the Context Foundation has run a number of projects in cultural capitals where tourism numbers are skyrocketing and the effects of overtourism are palpable. These activities have ranged from funding a tourism impact study in Venice to underwriting a course in conservation at the Courthauld Institute in London to gaining access to and publicizing lesser-known monuments. Currently, the Foundation runs three such projects worldwide: an apprenticeship project to support artisans in Florence, Italy; a youth center in an economically challenged neighborhood of Cartagena, Colombia; and an after school program in a favela of Rio de Janeiro.
The Context Foundation also addresses the pernicious problem of travel exclusivity due to cost among low-income populations. We believe deeply in the power of travel to educate and transform; and in order to give access to this power to a wider array of people, we run an annual travel scholarship with the St. Hope Schools in Sacramento, California.
